National Museum of African American History and Culture

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is a Smithsonian Institution museum located in Washington D.C. It was established by an Act of Congress in 2003, and opened its doors to the public in 2016. The museum is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture.

The idea for the museum was first proposed by African American Civil War veterans in 1915, but it wasn't until 2003 that it was officially established by an Act of Congress. The museum's collections include over 36,000 artifacts, including documents, photographs, and other historical items, as well as works of art and cultural objects.

One of the highlights of the NMAAHC is the "Slavery and Freedom" exhibit, which explores the history of enslavement of Africans and African Americans in the United States and its impact on American society. The exhibit features artifacts, documents, and interactive displays that tell the story of enslaved people, their families, and their communities, as well as the abolitionist movement and the fight for freedom and civil rights.

Another must-see exhibit is the "Musical Crossroads" exhibit, which explores the profound influence of African American music on American culture and the world. The exhibit features artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays that highlight the history and impact of African American music, including gospel, blues, jazz, soul, hip-hop, and more.

The museum also has an exhibit called "A Changing America: 1968 and Beyond" which explores the Civil Rights Movement and its aftermath, with a particular focus on the pivotal year of 1968.

The NMAAHC also offers a variety of educational programs for visitors of all ages. The museum's "Smithsonian Learning Lab" is an online resource that allows visitors to explore the museum's collection and create their own digital projects. The museum also offers tours, lectures, and workshops for visitors who want to learn more about African American history and culture.

The museum's building is a work of art in itself. It was designed by the architect David Adjaye, and it was inspired by the three-tiered crowns used in West African art, it's the only Smithsonian museum located on the National Mall that is not part of the Smithsonian Castle. The building's design reflects the African American culture and the African Diaspora.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a must-see destination for anyone interested in African American history and culture. With its extensive collection, dynamic exhibits, and educational programs, the museum offers a unique and enlightening look at the rich and diverse history of the African American community.
